Best HomeKit Camera for SECURITY - ecobee SmartCamera

In this video and article, we’re going to look at the Best HomeKit Camera for SECURITY - ecobee SmartCamera. Let's review how intelligent it actually is.

ecobee is a smart home accessory company for everyone, as their products are compatible with Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, and Samsung SmartThings. I've been a huge fan of their smart thermostat and their Switch+ for years. And now ecobee as back with a new smart camera and a home monitoring service, that ties all their products together, called Haven. What's going on tech squad? Andru Edwards here, and this is the new ecobee SmartCamera.

Now, as I mentioned in the open, I heavily prefer ecobee's line of home products when compared to others specifically, because they work with all the major smart home platforms. Additionally, they've launched a new home monitoring service called Haven, which uses the camera as well as the sensors found in their other products, all working together to protect your home. ecobee sent over the new SmartCamera and additional sensor so I could try them out, and tell you about it. And big shout out to them for sponsoring this video. If you're unfamiliar with ecobee, I'll link to the video I did on their latest smartThermostat down in the description, along with a link to the new SmartCamera,

You get 1080P high definition recording with a 180 degree field of view, which virtually eliminates blind spots. The video was encrypted and everything is processed onboard using the camera's eight-core processor. This means that everything is processed locally rather than needing to be sent to the cloud. That keeps your privacy intact and saves on bandwidth as well. Clips are only shared to thecloud when the system is armed and motion is detected. And you can enable an automatic on-off function that will disable the camera whenever your family is around for greater privacy.

The SmartFocus feature recognizes when a person comes into frame and adjust the shot, to keep them in the center as they move around. And like other ecobee products, the ecobee SmartCamera has Alexa Built-in. Now to be clear, it works with Alexa, but when I say it's built-in, I mean you can talk to the camera as if it were an Amazon Echo Dot and it'll respond to you using the built-in speakers. So you can ask the camera to do things like, turn on your smart lights, give you the weather, or answer trivia questions. The built-in speaker and microphone also allow for two-way talk.

So the camera can also act as an intercom. The camera also supports Apple HomeKit with Google Assistant and SmartThings integration coming soon as well. Night vision allows for clear video even in pitch black conditions, thanks to the built-in infrared LED. And when you put it all together, you probably start to realize that this camera has all the features needed to become the base station for home monitoring. And that's where the ecobee SmartSensor for door and windows comes into play to form ecobee Haven.

In fact, the SmartSensors do double duty. They can let you know when a door or window is opened, but they also have built-in motion sensors. You can get alerts on in-home activity when you're away, and you can even tie the motion sensing ability feature to other smart home automation, like automatically turning your smart lights on when you walk into a room, or setting your ecobee Thermostat to a specific temperature.ecobee Haven and takes all of your ecobee devices and transforms them intoa home monitoring system, without the need for key pads, hubs, or timers.

Instead it uses the geolocation of family members, linked to your ecobee family account, to arm and disarm automatically, while still also allowing you to do the same with your voice. All ecobee Haven plans include 14 days of video history, pricing is $5 per month for home monitoring with one camera, and $10 per month for home monitoring with unlimited cameras. The SmartCamera itself is available for $179, but ecobee also has several bundles available, if you wanna get multiple sensors, cameras, thermostats, and more. I'll leave a link in the description to where you can find all the information on the bundles available.

Now it should be said that this isn't a fully monitored system that can call the authorities if there's a break in, or that can alert the fire department if a fire breaks out. Instead Haven sends you alerts and notifications to your smartphone, allowing you to see video clips of what the camera captured  along with details on which doors, windows, and which motion detectors caught anything. From there, you can trigger a loud siren to sound from the SmartCamera itself. It's an inexpensive way to get extra peace of mind for your home, while you and your family are away.
